SYLVIE’S LOVE
Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha star as young people in love with music and each other in this sweeping drama, which nods to the golden era of movie romances.
In the summer of 1957, Sylvie (Tessa Thompson, PFF27’s LITTLE WOODS) is helping out at her father’s Harlem record store. Though she has a fiancée fighting overseas in Korea, Sylvie’s world shifts forever when saxophonist Robert (Nnamdi Asomugh) walks into the shop in search of a job to supplement his meager earnings on the nightclub circuit. Robert’s arrival marks the start of a relationship that’s initially founded on a shared love of music, but grows into a grand passion that will dramatically shape his and Sylvie’s lives for years to come. Even as they fall into and out of each other’s lives over the years and the world around them changes in unpredictable ways, Robert and Sylvie’s love remains irrepressible. Writer-director Eugene Ashe has concocted an affectionate tribute to the great romantic melodramas of Hollywood’s Golden Age, smartly updated to reflect the experiences of African Americans living and loving in a period of immense social change. Featuring a jazzy original score by Fabrice Lecomte and lush cinematography by Declan Quinn, SYLVIE’S LOVE is a feast for the senses and for the heart.
