TRUE MOTHERS
The adoptive parents of a young boy in kindergarten have their lives turned upside down after they are contacted by a woman claiming to be the birth mother.
Married couple Kiyokazu (Arata Iura) and Satoko (Hiromi Nagasaku) are unable to have a child of their own. When they seek adoption, they find an organization that takes on young women who are pregnant but are unable to raise the child themself. When the couple’s child reaches kindergarten age, a disheveled young woman shows up claiming to be his mother. But when Kiyokazu and Satoko first took their newborn home, they met the birth mother. Her name was Hikari (Aju Makita), and the woman in front of them looks and acts nothing like her. Told beautifully in a non-linear fashion, this impressive saga jumps through time, slowly building to a gut-wrenching conclusion. From Japanese auteur Naomi Kawase (AN, PFF24), TRUE MOTHERS is an engrossing and unhurried look into the complicated world of infertility, adoption, and the burden of emotions placed on the young women carrying children they know they cannot raise. Filled with arresting camerawork and heartbreaking performances, this ambitious film explores the many different avenues and realities of what it means to be a mother.
