TWO OF US

FILIPPO MENEGHETTI | Belgium, France, LUXEMBOURG | French | 2019 | 95 MIN

Two women who have hidden their romance from their families for decades find their relationship tested when they’re no longer able to meet in secret.

In many ways, Madeleine (Martine Chevallier) and Nina (Barbara Sukowa) are life partners, having been deeply in love for decades. Yet for various reasons the two have been forced to keep their relationship a secret, shuttling between one another’s neighboring apartments and sharing an affectionate, insular world unnoticed by outsiders. Tired of the secrecy and determined to sell their apartments and move together to Rome, Nina pressures the resistant Madeleine to reveal the truth to her judgmental adult children. When an unexpected event makes it impossible for the two women to carry on their affair as before, it adds to the make-or-break immediacy of their predicament, forcing the couple to make a wrenchingly difficult choice. Director Filippo Meneghetti’s narrative debut is a work of exquisite subtlety and raw emotion, showcasing the bravura performances of his lead actresses. Chevallier and Sukowa shine as two intimately connected yet very different women, with Chevallier relying on subtle looks and gestures to convey Madeleine’s deep-rooted passions and fears while Sukowa lends mesmerizing intensity to Nina’s fiery, unbridled emotions.
