A TALE OF LOVE AND DESIRE
While studying sensual Arab literature, a repressed student begins to fall for a beguiling young woman, forcing him to question his identity and listen to his desires.
At university, French-Algerian Ahmed (Sami Outalbali), who grew up in the working-class suburbs of Paris, meets Farah (Zbeida Belhajamor), a new arrival from Tunisia. While their connection is immediate, the two are fundamentally different. Farah is an irrepressible free spirit, determined to live life to its fullest and enjoy her years in Paris. Ahmed, on the other hand, is from a more conservative background, and feels the weight of his family’s expectations on his shoulders. In the ravishing and frequently erotic language of the medieval Arabic literature that he studies in class, Ahmed recognizes a reflection of his own yearnings. Yet as he starts to fall in love with Farah, Ahmed tries to suppress the feeling, afraid to give into his impulses. Sensitively exploring the intersection of sex and love from the rarely seen perspective of the Arab experience, Leyla Bouzid’s sexy and seductive sophomore feature is a thoughtful, sexy coming-of-age story.
