AGNES

Mickey Reece | USA | English | 2021 | 93 MIN

Oklahoman auteur Mickey Reece defies genre expectations with this audacious and idiosyncratic film about the exorcism of a young nun and what is left behind for her best friend.

Once you’ve seen a film by Mickey Reece, you’re unlikely to ever forget it. After years of working in obscurity in Oklahoma, casting friends and family in one spirited DIY effort after another, he has emerged a cinematic alchemist, fearlessly recasting genre elements and 70s Euro arthouse sensibilities into fiercely original films like last year’s Climate of the Hunter and, now, Agnes. Sent by the Church to a remote convent to investigate the possible demonic possession of a young nun named Agnes, the recently disgraced Father Donaghue (Ben Hall) arrives armed with little more than a healthy skepticism and his faith in God. At his side is recent seminary graduate Benjamin (Jake Horowitz), a faithful but still unordained young man tasked by the Church elders to keep a watchful eye on his former teacher. Despite the best efforts of these two men, however, only Sister Mary (Molly Quinn), a young nun who was Agnes’s friend and confidant, is able to see past the rage and blasphemy, perhaps because she’s haunted by her own demons. As Reece reveals Mary’s unfortunate past and her troubling, post-exorcism future, what at first seemed familiar becomes something wholly unexpected—a daring, quietly unsettling portrait of a young woman at a crossroads.

CAST: Molly Quinn, Jake Horowitz, Sean Gunn, Chris Browning
