ALL ABOUT MY SISTERS

Wang Qiong | USA | Mandarin | 2021 | 175 MIN

Over several years, Temple grad assistant Wang Qiong focuses the camera on her family, exploring the deep-seated pain and lingering effects of China’s devastating one-child policy.

A singular, fully realized, and accomplished work of art, Wang Qiong’s debut feature ALL ABOUT MY SISTERS is a vast portrait of a family frayed by China’s one-child policy and the labor required to slowly rebuild bonds that were never fully forged. The failed abortion and abandonment of Wang’s younger sister Jin in the 90s continues to haunt the family decades later. After she is saved by her uncle and aunt, an older Jin remains resentful of her biological parents, who saw no other option for survival but to obey the law. Through startlingly raw testimonials from her many family members, Wang creates a vivid understanding of the effect the controversial policy had on individual women and the lasting repercussions it had for an exponentially growing country. Though the story’s catalyst stems from pain and regret, Wang perfectly melds sequences of everyday joy and reckoning to create an absorbing documentary like no other this year.
