ANTLERS

Scott Cooper | Canada, Mexico, USA | English | 2021 | 99 MIN

After 20 years, a troubled school teacher reunites with her estranged brother in their rural Oregon hometown, only to discover an evil spirit has awoken.

Renowned for intense works like Out of the Furnace and Hostiles, filmmaker Scott Cooper has an eye for depicting humanity’s innate brutality. Throughout his career he has garnered inspired, raw performances from the likes of Christian Bale and, in an Academy Award winning role, Jeff Bridges. With his long anticipated delve into horror Antlers, Cooper captures a startling, chilly performance from Keri Russell as Julia Meadows. Middle school teacher Julia is a walking time bomb filled with bubbling trauma that’s triggered any time her frustrated brother, local sheriff Paul (Jesse Plemmons), mentions their late father. The perpetually grey, rainy backdrop of Oregon doesn’t offer any solace. The sullen Julia recognizes a kindred spirit when misunderstood, bullied student Lucas (discovery Jeremy T. Thomas) begins to exhibit odd tendencies and a sickly appearance at school. What begins as a concerned investigation evolves into a monstrous discovery of supernatural proportions that seems to feed off of pain and struggle– something Julia, Paul, and Lucas know a thing or two about.

CAST: Keri Russell, Jesse Plemons, Jeremy T. Thomas, Graham Greene
