CAPTAIN VOLKONOGOV ESCAPED
Blending deadpan humor, pathos, and breakneck thrills, this electrifying historical drama follows a Soviet enforcer marked for death and desperate for redemption.
In Stalin-era Leningrad, dutiful Captain Fedor Volkonogov (Yuriy Borisov) is a feared member of the National Security Service with a talent for getting confessions out of his (mostly innocent) victims. Sensing that his time on the chopping block is imminent, Volkonogov flees, and in the blink of an eye goes from being an agent of the state to a fugitive, pursued by his former colleagues. In an eerie vision from the spirit world, Vokonogov is warned that he’s destined for Hell if he doesn’t earn forgiveness from at least one of his victim’s families. With sickly Major Golovnya (Timofey Tribuntsev) hot on his trails, Volkonogov seeks out the families of each of his victims on a frantic dash for absolution. But what begins purely as a bid to save his soul from eternal hellfire turns into something more complex, as the captain starts to comprehend the true effects of his actions. Playing like a philosophical riff on The Fugitive and featuring astonishing, dystopian production design and a physically and emotionally dexterous central performance from Russian rising star Yuriy Borisov, Aleksey Chupov and Natasha Merkulova’s jaw-dropping philosophical thriller is a chase film like no other.
