CLERK

Malcolm Ingram | Canada, USA | English | 2021 | 111 MIN

Filmmaker and “View Askewniverse” creator Kevin Smith gets the camera turned on him in this funny, poignant, and informative journey through his eventful life and career.

More than perhaps any other director working today, Kevin Smith is as beloved for who he is as for the films he’s made. In this amiable documentary portrait, Smith acts as a tour guide through his life, from his Catholic school days to his more recent forays into marijuana use and veganism, offering insight into the ways his personal and creative lives informed one another. In interviews, Smith is typically hilarious, wise, and forthright about the ups and downs of his filmography: from courting controversy among the religious right with his Catholicism-skewering comedy DOGMA, to being caught in the Bennifer hoopla with the misunderstood JERSEY GIRL, to a taking an unexpected turn toward genre filmmaking with RED STATE and TUSK. Director Malcolm Ingram has assembled an impressive lineup of interviewees eager to share their stories, including friends, family members, and famous faces like Ben Affleck and Justin Long. A loving tribute sure to fascinate both diehards and casual fans, CLERK captures the passion and spirit that make Smith not just a filmmaker, but a pop culture icon.
