COPILOT
German director Anne Zohra Berrached’s scorching romantic drama follows the passionate but turbulent relationship between two young people at the close of the 20th Century.
In the mid-1990s, shy science student Asli (Canan Kir) meets a charismatic Lebanese student named Saeed (Roger Azar), and soon she’s smitten by his mixture of boyish tenderness and forceful self-assurance. Against the wishes of Asli’s strict Turkish mother, the couple gets married. But while it’s easy to look past ominous warning signs during the first, passionate bloom of their romance, things get more difficult over the years as life puts new obstacles in the couple’s way and exposes their deeply entrenched differences. When Saeed makes a shocking and unexpected decision, Asli must find a way to reconcile her self-sacrificing devotion to her husband with her conscience. In previous work such as 24 WEEKS (PFF25), filmmaker Anne Zohra Berrached has demonstrated an ability to tackle hot-button topics without sacrificing the nuance and richness of her very complicated characters. The circumstances enveloping Asli and Saeed may be exceptional, but the emotions at play will be recognizable to anyone who’s felt the searing pangs of young love.
