DRIVE MY CAR
Embarking on a new play, a downtrodden theater actor-director bonds over past tragedies with his rebellious driver in this emotionally stirring, sensual Cannes award winner.
Expanding upon renowned author Haruki Murakami’s short story of the same name, filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi (ASAKO I AND II, PFF27) creates a vast cinematic journey filled with mystery, passion, surprise, and heartbreak in Drive My Car. Yûsuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima) is an acclaimed actor and playwright known to stage postmodern, multi-lingual adaptations from the likes of Samuel Beckett. When he isn’t waiting for Godot, Yûsuke and his TV writer wife Oto (Reika Kirishima) share their own love language filled with dreamt-up erotic encounters. A painful discovery brings Yûsuke to the city of Hiroshima for a production of Uncle Vanya and into the meteoric path of foul-mouthed personal driver Misaki (Tôko Miura). As the two spend silent, reluctant hours in Yûsuke’s vibrant red Saab, a burgeoning friendship may prove to be the only thing saving them from themselves. With a powerful, reserved performance from a rueful Nishijima that acts as a mirror to Miura’s surging regret and anger, DRIVE MY CAR is Hamaguchi’s most ambitious and accomplished film yet.
