HAPPENING
Winner of the Golden Lion at this year’s Venice Film Festival, Audrey Diwan’s searing drama details a young woman’s efforts to get an illegal abortion in 1960s France.
In 1963, 23-year-old university student Anne (Anamaria Vartolomei) is on her way to completing her studies, breaking away from her humble, working-class background in the process. When she becomes pregnant, Anne begins to see her dreams slipping away. She decides to terminate the pregnancy but must be cautious in a country where abortion is still illegal and even speaking about it is a taboo. Anne seeks out to every available option—both official and underground—but meets opposition at every turn. As the weeks roll by and Anne’s body continues to change, her situation grows more desperate. With her second feature, Audrey Diwan has crafted an intimate, harrowing look at the choices one woman must make in a society determined to curtail her agency and freedom. Based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Annie Ernaux, Happening is a period piece that nonetheless speaks powerfully to a present when women’s rights around the world are consistently under threat.
