HEAT
Michael Mann’s undisputed crime classic finds two aging professionals on different sides of the law discovering the true cost of their vocations at home and on the streets.
Famously pairing acting titans Al Pacino and Robert De Niro for the first time on screen, Michael Mann’s Heat is the pinnacle of the director’s robust filmography. After a long, notorious career as a high stakes robber, Neil McCauley (De Niro) has entered his twilight years, leading to reflection and, of course, one last job. With his esteemed crew of pros and hot heads, McCauley ignores increased police surveillance and sets his sights on a mid-day bank robbery with a promised $12.2 million haul. The only man standing in his way is LAPD detective Vincent Hanna (Pacino). A lifelong, dedicated policeman, the obsessive Hanna struggles to keep his personal life together with a third wife (Diane Venora) who despises him and a rebellious daughter (Natalie Portman) who resents him. As the game of cat and mouse heats up, the inevitable showdown between the two men promises to end in a rain of bullets—or maybe just a cup of coffee. Having already solidified his craft in thrilling individual character studies like Thief and Manhunter, Mann reached new heights in HEAT (presented here in a stunning 4k restoration) with a powerful cast of characters and themes that are only equaled by his explosive action set pieces.
CAST: Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Tom Sizemore, Jon Voight
