LAST FILM SHOW

Pan Nalin | India | English, Gujarati | 2021 | 110 MIN

This gorgeous homage to 35MM finds a mischievous young boy, along with his friends, discovering the power of film, despite objections from his father.

When nine-year-old Samay (Bhavin Rabari) first enters the Galaxy Cinema in Pan Nalin’s dazzling The Last Film Show, the director treats the pilgrimage like a holy, spiritual experience. The cavernous room becomes Samay’s Sistine Chapel and the light that emits from the projection booth could very well be sent from God to the wide-eyed troublemaker. Deciding at that very moment that movies are his life, Samay takes to skipping school every day to get an education in celluloid. He strikes a secret deal to turn over his mother’s home cooking to the sly projectionist Fazal (Bhavesh Shrimali) for covert film screenings and a chance to operate the massive projectors. But his future as a 35MM maven is threatened both by the interventions of his abusive, bitter father and by the advent of digital projection. The talented and loveable Rabari leads an ensemble of unforgettable characters living in a caste system that attempts to thwart dreams at every corner. Based in part on Nalin’s own religious experience at the cinema, the LAST FILM SHOW gushes with wonder and love for the promised adventures each reel of film can bring.
