LIMBO
Two policemen enlist a helpless ex-con to help them track a brutal serial killer in this furiously violent, uncompromising descent into Hong Kong’s criminal underbelly from Cheang Soi.
One of the most exciting talents of Hong Kong cinema, Cheang Soi (SPL II: A TIME FOR CONSEQUENCES, PFF24) returns to his action roots with this stylish, biting detective thriller. Rookie cop Will Ren (Mason Lee) and his grizzled partner Cham Lau (Lam Ka Tung) are on the hunt for a killer with a penchant for cutting off the hands of his victims, all of whom come from the marginalized corners of Hong Kong society. The officers enlist the help of career criminal Wong To (Cya Liu), who owes a debt to Cham after having caused a tragedy that devastated his family. Racked with guilt yet resistant to the cops’ plan, she encounters violence and brutality at every turn and risks falling victim to the killer herself. The tense buildup culminates in an epic, rain-soaked showdown that reaffirms Cheang’s place as one of Hong Kong’s living greats. Teaming with cinematographer Cheng Siu Keung, Cheang captures the action in distinctively high-contrast black and white, brilliantly evoking a sordid, trash-strewn environment in images that are at once gritty and strikingly beautiful.
