MEDUSA
In her daring and eye-popping second feature, Brazilian director Anita Rocha de Silveira envisions a surreal, nightmarish portrait of a gang of fanatical young Christian women on a quest to oppress the sinful.
As the religious alt-right movement continues to sweep across the country, Brazilian filmmakers have taken to imagining the (near) future repercussions of such intolerance through haunting satirical cinema. In Anita Rocha da Silveira’s blistering and trippy Medusa, an intimidating, masked girl-gang takes to the streets to physically force unwitting victims to atone for their sins. By day, leader Michele (Lara Tremouroux), along with best friend Mari (Mari Oleivera), lead conservative sirens through intoxicating pop songs for congregants of their neon-drenched evangelical church, hoping to attract the attention of teen militia hunks, the Watchmen of Scion. When a botched assault leaves Mari changed, she becomes a pariah among the beautiful and “pure.” She discovers a vice-ridden world outside the church that will lead to a reckoning for everyone involved. Saturated with electrifying visuals and offering a clever, feminist reclamation of Greek myth, MEDUSA is an empowering and unforgettable story of a young woman confronting religious fanatacism not with a whisper, but with a scream.
