MEMORIA
Delivering a captivating and powerful performance, Tilda Swinton stars as a botanist disturbed by mysterious noises in this enigmatic drama from Thai visionary Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
Long considered one of Thailand’s most revered filmmakers, Apichatpong Weerasethakul (UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES, CEMETERY OF SPLENDOR) ventured to Colombia to craft Memoria, his first film set outside his native country. In this characteristically dreamy film, urban landscapes collide with verdant and dense countryside, creating a world that might look familiar, but feels anything but. Jessica (Swinton), a British botanist visiting her sister in Bogotá, is awoken one night by an inexplicable and overpowering thump. Unable to sleep in the days following, Jessica is haunted by the elusive sound, soon realizing she is perhaps the only one who can hear it. In her journey to understand this uncanny sound, she seeks the help of Hernán (Juan Pablo Urrego), a sound engineer who does his best to recreate the noise for her. From there, Jessica’s mission begins to unravel into a bizarre and fantastical voyage into the depths of the human psyche. MEMORIA, which took home the Jury Prize at this year’s Cannes, explores one woman’s confounding sensory syndrome, while slowly revealing itself to be an unforgettable cinematic experience that stays with you long after the credits roll.
