THE NOVICE

Lauren Hadaway | USA | English | 2021 | 94 MIN

An award-winning standout of this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, this blistering drama follows a young woman who will stop at nothing to ascend the ranks of her college’s rowing team.

In THE NOVICE, Isabelle Fuhrman stars as Alex Dall, a college freshman whose decision to join her school’s rowing team launches her on a grueling, single-minded struggle to be the best. Alex is a particular breed of Type A personality – the kind of goal-oriented worker who opts to be a Physics major precisely because physics is her worst subject. When told early on that she’s not built for competitive rowing, Alex only becomes more determined to prove her mettle by making varsity by the end of freshman year, pushing her body and mind nearly to the breaking point in the process. She cautiously forms a friendship with fellow novice rower Jamie (Amy Forsyth) and a budding romance with her TA (Dilone), but Alex’s obsessive devotion to rowing threatens to alienate anyone who tries to get close to her. The debut feature of filmmaker Lauren Hadaway, this remarkably assured drama deservedly took home awards at Tribeca for Best U.S. Narrative Feature and for Fuhrman’s spellbinding, star-making performance.
