OFFSEASON
An eerily deserted vacation town provides the memorable setting for this classically crafted supernatural thriller from horror maestro Mickey Keating.
Anyone who’s stumbled onto a seasonal resort town creepily depleted of life during the slow season will feel a shudder of recognition watching OFFSEASON, the latest feature from writer-director Mickey Keating. Marie (Jocelin Donahue) was raised hearing stories of the isolated island town where her late mom Ava (Melora Walters) grew up and eventually escaped. Yet a mysterious clause in Ava’s will states her wish to be buried on the island, and soon Marie is beckoned there by news that her mom’s grave has been desecrated. She and her boyfriend George (Joe Swanberg) barely make it onto the island before the menacing bridge operator (Richard Brake) closes the town to visitors for the season, and things only get more ominous from there. The few remaining townspeople are a spooky, secretive bunch, and Marie’s stay on the island descends into nightmarish territory as she begins to uncover the terrible secret linking her family to the town. With OFFSEASON, Keating has brought to the screen a beautifully eerie environment filled with rolling fog and desolate, windswept beaches, providing a potent backdrop for the film’s devilishly effective scares.
