OUR AMERICAN FAMILY
Honest and unflinching, this documentary follows the members of a Philadelphia family fighting to rebuild their relationships after being nearly torn apart by addiction.
While many films have documented America’s ongoing opioid crisis, OUR AMERICAN FAMILY offers an uncommonly intimate look at the issue by homing in on one typical family grappling with an all-too-common problem: the generational legacy of addiction. Mom Linda learned about addiction from watching her own mother, and now sees how the same issue affects her three children, two of whom are recovering addicts. Oldest daughter Nicole battles to stay sober and retain custody of her two-year-old daughter. Middle son Chris has followed his own path to sobriety after learning about heroin from his sister, while youngest son Stephen attempts to assert his place in the world after living in the shadow of his siblings’ situation. Meanwhile, stepdad Bryan struggles to maintain his compassion despite his frustration. Filmmakers Hallee Adelman and Sean O’Grady follow the family over the course of a make-or-break year, observing several difficult, enormously consequential moments in Nicole’s recovery and the way that these events reverberate throughout the family.
