PAPER & GLUE

JR | Brazil, France, Mexico, USA | English, French, Portuguese, Spanish | 2021 | 94 MIN

Renowned street artist JR travels the world revisiting his larger-than-life projects, which continue to inspire and unite millions while shining a spotlight on forgotten communities.

After charming audiences around the world as the delightful sidekick to the late Agnès Varda in FACES PLACES (PFF26), playful French artist JR returns with a reflection on his own acclaimed work. From the favelas of Rio, to the majestic Louvre, to the US-Mexico border, the iconic self-proclaimed “photgraffeur” (a portmanteau of photographer and graffiti) uses the most unassuming urban locations to highlight the place’s citizens and stir conversations through compassion and candor. PAPER & GLUE is an exuberant, self-directed film featuring a rich and diverse archive of JR origin stories, from trespassing on Parisian rooftops at night to his early collaborations with fellow filmmaker Ladj Ly (LES MISÉRABLES, PFF28). When the two learn of plans for the destruction of the Parisian projects where Ly grew up, JR is determined to construct one of his most elaborate and personal works yet. Though his face may always be hidden behind his signature sunglasses and fedora, JR never stops dismantling figurative and literal borders to bring the most unlikely communities together through art and love.
