PERFUME DE GARDENIAS

Macha Colón | Colombia, Puerto Rico | Spanish | 2021 | 97 MIN

After the death of her husband, a grieving widow is enlisted by a coterie of gossipy elderly ladies in her neighborhood to create and plan custom, idiosyncratic funerals

While mourning her loss, recent widow Isabel (Luz María Rondón) agrees to enter a strange line of work, designing funerals for her neighbors. Despite her initial hesitation, each new client causes Isabel’s creativity to blossom, as she incorporates details from the dearly-departed’s life stories to celebrate them in their last rites. It is through giving her sick neighbors a chance to decide how their lives should be honored after their passing that Isabel comes to terms with her own grief and ultimately understands that in nature, some things must die for others to bloom. Part telenovela, part absurdist comedy, Macha Colón’s feature debut constructs a vivid portrait of customs, characters, and the singularities of her Puerto Rican community. Using dark comedy and a touch of whimsy, Colón explores the relationship between life, death, and grief in a refreshingly humorous style. With great flair, Perfume de Gardenias marks the arrival of a new voice in contemporary Latin-American cinema.

CAST: Luz María Rondón, Sharon Riley, Katira María, Carmen Nydia Velázquez
