PETITE MAMAN
In her follow-up to the dazzling PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE (PFF28), Céline Sciamma returns with an intimate and tender study of childhood and a daughter’s bond with her mother.
After losing her grandmother, precocious eight-year-old Nelly (Joséphine Sanz, in an outstanding performance) helps pack up her mother’s childhood home. Nelly yearns to learn more about the youth of her mother, Marion (Nina Meurisse). While exploring the nearby woods, Nelly meets fellow eight-year-old Marion (Gabrielle Sanz), who shares Nelly’s mother’s name, bears a striking resemblance to Nelly, and happens to live in a home that looks just like Nelly’s late grandmother’s. The two girls become fast friends, bonding over pancakes, treehouses, and acting. But after sharing a life-altering secret, they both realize their bond is stronger than they could have ever imagined. Two years after breaking out with the sweeping period romance PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE, French auteur Céline Sciamma has returned with a work that’s modest in scale yet no less emotionally resonant. Revisiting themes of contemporary adolescence that characterized her earlier films like TOMBOY and GIRLHOOD (PFF23), Sciamma lends her delicate and masterful touch to this nostalgic and deeply personal exploration of loss, memory, and connection, making Petite Maman a delightful and memorable standout of the year.
