SALOUM

Jean Luc Herbulot | Senegal | French, Wolof | 2021 | 84 MIN

Mercenaries transporting a fugitive and stolen bounty become stranded after their plane is grounded in a remote and mystical region of Senegal, home to dark ancestral forces.

During a military coup in Guinea Bissau, the trio of legendary mercenaries known as the Bangui Hyenas extracts a drug lord and his loot from the war-torn country. The escape plane leaks fuel, forcing them to make an emergency landing in rural Senegal. Stranded with a fugitive and stolen bounty, the mercenaries must navigate the Sine-Saloum Delta, a Senegalese coastal wetland distinct for its rich biodiversity and long-standing mysticism. Chaka (Yann Gael), the group’s leader, guides them to a remote tourist lodging where they seek refuge under false identities and plan to secure fuel and repair their plane. Their hideout, however, is infiltrated by unexpected guests: Souleymane (Ndiaga Mbow), a suspicious police captain, and Awa (Evelyne Ily Juhen), a non-verbal deaf woman who recognizes the Hyenas. More threatening than the risk of exposure is Chaka’s hidden agenda. He has led them to an encampment with a storied history that intertwines with his haunting past. His ruthless and dangerous mission unleashes a deadly spiritual force that threatens to kill them all. Saloum fuses the tradition of the horror and crime genres to create an exciting supernatural thriller that exposes the dangerous cycle of revenge.
