SOUL KIDS
At Stax Records, legendary home of Otis Redding and The Staples Sisters, a new generation of gifted musicians learns to respect themselves and discover soul legends of the past.
As the nation continues to reckon with years of systemic racism, economic inequality, and sky-rocketing poverty rates, Memphis’s Stax Music Academy offers an invaluable escape for its young students. For over 20 years the legendary recording studio that once captured the Southern soul of Sam and Dave, Isaac Hayes, and Booker T. and the M.G.’s has been the birthplace of an inspiring new class of musicians, thinkers, and leaders. The academy strives to connect the dialogue and music-driven activism the label was known for in its 1960s heyday with the youth of today. Hugo Sobelman’s heartening SOUL KIDS may be overflowing with goosebump-inducing vocal performances and jaw-dropping musicianship, but the true power of the film lies in the academy’s wise-beyond-their-years students. Candid classroom discussions about the Black experience in the United States and Stax Records artists’ legacy build to a portrait of compassionate and hopeful performers ready to take center stage.
