SUNDOWN
Mexican auteur Michel Franco’s enigmatic, disquieting character study sees Tim Roth as a wealthy British man abruptly ejected from his life while on vacation at a luxury resort.
Following last year’s provocative NEW ORDER (PFF29), Michel Franco returns with a pared-down but no less potent drama featuring a haunting central performance from Roth. Neil Bennett (Roth) and Alice Bennett (Charlotte Gainsbourg) are on holiday with their family at a luxe Acapulco resort where they spend their days swimming and sunbathing while being waited on hand and foot. When a family emergency cuts the trip short, they rush to the airport, only to discover Neil has lost his passport and must remain behind in Mexico alone. He checks into a cheap hotel and, as his stay continues to be prolonged, tensions ensue with Alice. With characteristic restraint, Franco slowly peels back the layers of his narrative onion, building an ominous sense of dread throughout. And as a man whose inner turmoil often remains disturbingly opaque even as violence and discord erupt around him, Roth gives one of his most mesmerizing performances to date.
