THE SADNESS
This gloriously unhinged gorefest follows a young couple trying to reunite amid a city ravaged by a plague that turns its victims into deranged, bloodthirsty sadists.
In THE SADNESS, a pandemic that’s been spreading throughout Taiwan suddenly mutates, altering the minds of its hosts and leading to unhinged murder and mayhem. But while this dizzyingly depraved horror film has one foot firmly in the zombie subgenre, the infected killers in writer-director Rob Jabazz’s debut are not mindless, staggering oafs. No, this virus makes its hosts viciously imaginative, leading them to enact the most barbaric crimes in the most perversely creative ways. Young lovers Jim (Berant Zhu) and Kat (Regina Lei) are in separate parts of the city when all Hell breaks loose, and must fight their way back to each other, facing terror and depravity along the way. Jabazz throws every manner of gruesome obstacle in their way, and each blood-splattered, entrails-strewn set piece in THE SADNESS is more mind-bogglingly intense than the one before. Even the most hardened horror fans will be shocked and awed by Jabazz’s willingness to go to extremes, marking the emergence of an exciting new voice in genre filmmaking.
