THE SOUVENIR PART II

Joanna Hogg | UK | English | 2021 | 106 MIN

A follow-up to her 2019 breakthrough, Joanna Hogg’s latest semi-autobiographical drama captures a young woman channeling grief into creative expression.

Returning to the characters and situations of THE SOUVENIR, Joanna Hogg has crafted both a sequel and a subtly provocative re-imagining of her earlier work. PART II picks up where the earlier film left off, with protagonist Julie (Honor Swinton Byrne) reeling after the sudden death of her boyfriend. Supported by her reserved but caring parents (Tilda Swinton and James Spencer Ashworth), Julie summons the strength to jump back into her filmmaking. But Julie’s newly-conceived thesis film—a nakedly autobiographical account of a young woman in a tumultuous relationship with a heroin-addicted older man—is met with skepticism from her professors and near mutiny from her cast and crew. Somehow, Julie must soldier past their misgivings and her own self-doubt in order to process her loss in a way that only she can. Expanding both the scope and boldness of its predecessor, PART II is a thoughtful, intricately constructed meta-memoir and portrait of an artist coming into her own, culminating in a work of audacious cinematic brilliance that’s a testament to Hogg’s uncompromising vision.

CAST: Honor Swinton Byrne, Tilda Swinton, Richard Ayoade, Charlie Heaton
