THE SOUVENIR

Joanna Hogg | UK | English | 2019 | 119 MIN

Joanna Hogg’s masterful drama is the story of a young film student whose world is rocked by a tumultuous relationship with a charismatic but troubled older man.

After quietly establishing herself on the international festival circuit with her acclaimed first three features, Joanna Hogg truly broke out onto the world stage with this semi-autobiographical drama, winner of the World Cinema Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. Set in 1980s London, THE SOUVENIR follows a formative period in the life of Julie (Honor Swinton Byrne), an impressionable young film student who’s struggling to find her voice both in her work and in her personal life. Julie begins a whirlwind relationship with Anthony (Tom Burke), a confident, slightly older Foreign Office employee whose charmingly evasive demeanor hides a much darker side. Soon Anthony is living in Julie’s flat, draining her of her finances and energy, and leaving her caught between the joy of first love and the seeming inevitability of heartbreak. Featuring revelatory performances from Burke and newcomer Swinton Byrne, THE SOUVENIR isn’t just an indelible portrayal of a toxic relationship; it’s one of cinema’s most incisive looks at the way these relationships make us the people we are.

CAST: Honor Swinton-Byrne, Tom Burke, Tilda Swinton, Richard Ayoade
