A WOMAN ON THE OUTSIDE
This powerful documentary follows Philadelphia native Kristal Bush, who works to keep people connected to their loved ones in prison even as she contends with the impact of incarceration on her own family. Kristal is the founder of Bridging the Gap, a van service for those visiting their family members in prisons far outside the city. Kristal knows the struggle firsthand, having seen many of the men in her life get caught up in the criminal justice system. But when both her father and brother are released, Kristal and her family find that life on the outside has its own set of pitfalls for the formerly incarcerated. Juggling her responsibilities to her family, her community, and her business, Kristal fights to maintain a sense of normalcy and build a brighter future for herself and her nephew Nyvae. Filmed over several years, A Woman on the Outside is a moving and inspiring portrait of a young woman prevailing in spite of a system designed to break her down.
