ALCARRÀS
Winner of the top prize at this year’s Berlinale, Carla Simón’s sun-dappled ensemble drama follows a rural family whose agricultural way of life is under threat from developers. For generations, the members of the Solé family have supported themselves by growing peaches. Now the Solés face eviction, and their wealthy landlords plan to convert the orchards into solar panel fields. The impending rupture begins to cause rifts in the tight-knit clan, with grandfather Rogelio (Josep Abad) desperately trying to prove his ownership of the land while his younger relatives squabble over what to do next. Aided by cinematographer Daniela Cajías, Simón vividly captures the arid yet beautiful landscape of her native Catalonia. Working with a cast of local nonprofessional actors, she immerses viewers in the daily rhythms of farming, capturing the bittersweet feeling of a summer—and a way of life—that’s coming to an end.
