ALICE, DARLING
From the outside, Alice (Anna Kendrick) seems to have it all, including a picture-perfect relationship with handsome, smooth-talking artist Simon (Charlie Carrick). But her longtime friends Sophie (Wunmi Mosaku) and Tess (Kaniehtiio Horn) know that something is deeply wrong. Alice is tightly wound to the point of being manic, and when the three decide to get away for a girls’ weekend in the woods, Alice feels compelled to lie to Simon, telling him that she’ll be on a business trip. The trio’s hopes for a carefree week are thwarted as Simon continues to exert his menacing influence through perpetual texts, making his grip over Alice’s psyche heartbreakingly clear. Unable to stand by as their friend suffers silently, Sophie and Tess try desperately to make her see the true, toxic nature of her relationship before it’s too late. Sensitively brought to life by an excellent cast, ALICE, DARLING is an insightful, chilling look at the insidious nature of psychological abuse.
