ALL THAT BREATHES
Winner of top documentary prizes at both Sundance and Cannes, ALL THAT BREATHES follows Mohammed Saud and Nadeem Shahzad, Muslim brothers who find a kinship with the black kites flying above New Delhi. The brothers became interested in these scavengers when they learned how often the raptors are injured by the popular sport of competitive kite flying. Though the birds are frequently cut by kite strings or poisoned by pollution, few people in the city are able or willing to help them. Believing that all animals should receive treatment, Saud and Shahzad created a bird clinic, which they operate in their spare time between family and work commitments. Despite the strain on their finances and relationships, they persist. Set against a backdrop of India’s rising anti-Muslim sentiment and growing environmental concerns, this beautiful and serene documentary captures the brothers’ unusual devotion to a neglected species while facing their own displacement in a radically shifting culture.
