ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED
31st Philadelphia Film Festival Closing Night Film
Oscar-winner Laura Poitras (CITIZENFOUR) took home the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for this stunning portrait of acclaimed artist and activist Nan Goldin, whose revered photographs and slideshows have for decades captured her most intimate relationships with friends and lovers, as well as the mirrored crises of the AIDS and opioid epidemics. Poitras gives Goldin a platform to powerfully narrate her own story, weaving together episodes from a colorful life touched by trauma. We see how Goldin’s past experiences led to her present activism with P.A.I.N., a group dedicated to destigmatizing drug addiction and protesting art institutions that accept money from the Sackler family, the pharmaceutical billionaires behind OxyContin. Drawing heavily on Goldin’s soulful and highly personal body of work, ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED is a testament to the fearless honesty of this irrepressible artist, for whom creative expression and political conviction are inextricably linked.
