BURNING DAYS
A young public prosecutor assigned to a drought-stricken Turkish backwater becomes entangled in a web of small-town corruption and crime in this taut Turkish thriller. Soon after arriving in Yaniklar, buttoned-up Emre (Selahattin Paşali) quickly finds that his strict principles have no place in this small rural town, where political favors and shady dealings rule the day. Despite the best efforts of the mayor’s sleazy son Sahin (Erol Babaoğlu) to win over Emre with promises of boar hunts and brothel visits, Emre finds himself more drawn to handsome local newspaperman Murat (Ekin Koç). When a night out with Sahin and his cronies goes terribly awry, Emre’s sense of right and wrong is put to the test, and the prosecutor finds himself the target of dangerous insinuations. Employing a confident, controlled visual style, Emin Alper has crafted a cunningly entertaining parable of life under the thumb of a closed-minded, patriarchal society.
