Jennifer Lawrence delivers a subtly wrenching performance in this nuanced portrait of a soldier forced to return home to New Orleans after suffering a devastating injury. While in Afghanistan, Army Corps engineer Lynsey (Lawrence) was in a vehicle that struck a bomb, leaving her with profound physical, cognitive, and emotional damage. After enduring weeks of rehab, Lynsey moves in with her mother and makes a living cleaning pools while she anxiously awaits medical approval for redeployment. But her desire to return to battle begins to wane when she strikes up a friendship with mechanic James (Brian Tyree Henry, PFF27’s If Beale Street Could Talk), a man who bears his own physical and emotional scars. As the two grow closer, Lynsey begins to let down her guard, finding companionship in someone who understands her day-to-day struggles. Director Lila Neugebauer delivers an impressive feature debut with this raw, intimate look at two lost souls finding connection, providing a superb showcase for the talents of Lawrence and Henry.
