A CONFUCIAN CONFUSION
Following his epic, generation-defining masterpiece A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY, Taiwanese filmmaker Edward Yang adopted a much lighter tone with this satirical urban comedy, newly restored in 4K. Yang casts a withering eye on a rising generation of ambitious young people reaping the benefits of Taiwan’s newly booming economy in the mid-1990s. Molly (Ni Shu-chun) is a high-powered advertising executive in a seemingly perfect relationship with a wealthy heir. Yet beneath the surface there’s an undercurrent of dissatisfaction and fear, and over the course of three days, Yang follows along as Molly, her fiancé, her sister, and a gaggle of other young people fumblingly chase their personal and professional aspirations. With wry, ironic wit, Yang skewers the bewildering clash between the Western-style materialism his characters have eagerly absorbed and the traditional values of their culture.
