PHANTOM THREAD breakout Vicky Krieps gets a fitting showcase for her talent in this witty historical drama, which netted her the Best Performance prize in the Un Certain Regard section of this year’s Cannes Film Festival. CORSAGE views the gilded world of 19th-century European royals through the eyes of one of the era’s most renowned but least understood women, Austria’s Empress Elisabeth. Famously portrayed by a girlish Romy Schneider in the lighthearted Sissi films, the Elisabeth of Corsage is a decidedly more prickly character. Entering her forties, the empress finds it increasingly difficult to maintain her picture-perfect public image and begins to buck at the strictures placed upon her. Restlessly traveling across the continent and encountering a string of lovers and confidantes, she dares to imagine a new path for herself. Centered on Krieps’s commanding yet vulnerable performance, it’s a bold and at times irreverent reinvention of the staid costume drama, revealing the fascinatingly complex woman behind the myth.
