DECISION TO LEAVE
When a man mysteriously falls to his death from a mountain peak, detective Hae-joon (Park Hae-il) is dispatched to meet with the dead man’s wife, Chinese national Seo-rae (Tang Wei). The alluring young woman exhibits none of the typical behaviors of a grieving widow, sparking Hae-joon’s suspicion that she might have had something to do with her husband’s untimely death. Yet as he follows the woman closely, the married detective is increasingly destabilized by his feelings for his suspect, his professional interest colored by an obsessive attraction. What ensues is a beguilingly twisted game of erotic tension, shadowy motives, and incipient violence, as Hae-joon is drawn closer into Seo-rae’s magnetic orbit. South Korean auteur Park Chan-wook (PFF14’s OLDBOY, PFF25’s THE HANDMAIDEN) deservedly took home the Best Director prize at Cannes for this immaculately crafted, Hitchcock-influenced neo-noir.
