LAND OF GOLD
Anxiously awaiting parenthood, Kiran (writer and director Nardeep Khurmi) impulsively accepts a last-minute trucking gig, even though his wife Preeti (Pallavi Sastry) is only a few weeks away from giving birth. Kiran sets out on a cross-country road trip to reflect on his impending role as a first-time father and his strained relationship with his own father (Iqbal Theba). After investigating some strange noises coming from his shipping container, Kiran discovers Elena (Caroline Valencia), a 9-year-old undocumented Mexican-American girl trying to find her family. Unwilling to turn Elena in, Kiran takes her under his apprehensive wing as he continues to make his cross-country pilgrimage. Encountering border patrol, testing out traditional foods, and navigating unexpected intersections of religious and cultural beliefs, this unlikely pair bond in a familial way Kiran never thought possible. Philadelphia naitve Khurmi’s thoughtful writing and intimate directing help shape this poignant and heartwarming examination of cultural identity and the lengths we go to for those we love.
