LYNCH/OZ
While the imaginative world of L. Frank Baum and the nightmarish universe of David Lynch might seem far apart, references to The Wizard of Oz are littered throughout Lynch’s oeuvre, from myriad appearances of red shoes and people named Judy to a literal cameo from Glinda the Good Witch in Wild at Heart. In the latest cinematic deep-dive from director Alexandre O. Philippe, several prominent critics and filmmakers — including John Waters, David Lowery, Karyn Kusama, and Something in the Dirt helmers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead — share their insights into all things Lynch, Oz, and in between. Pairing their deeply considered commentary with a masterfully edited barrage of film clips, LYNCH/OZ draws unexpected comparisons between disparate works, scrambling preconceptions and creating mind-bending new connections along the way. More than just a look at one influential filmmaker and his cinematic obsession, it’s a breathtaking meditation on the power of cinema to shape and reflect our dreams.
