NANNY
Senegalese immigrant Aisha (Anna Diop) can’t shake a feeling that things aren’t right. Stranded in the luxurious yet sterile high-rise apartment of an Upper East Side couple, the new nanny is constantly reminded that she does not belong. Maybe it’s the tightly wound Amy (Michelle Monaghan) barring any food in the apartment from Aisha’s culture or the ogling, exoticizing eyes from Amy’s husband Adam (Morgan Spector). Or maybe it’s the recurring nightmares that have plagued her sleep since she took the gig. As she forges through constant microaggressions for a paycheck to bring her son to the U.S., it is only a matter of time before she breaks. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, filmmaker Nikyatu Jusu shrewdly utilizes elements of horror cinema to make the spine tingle as she immerses Aisha in an increasingly unsettling situation. But this isn’t a fantastical scenario made up for the big screen; it’s reality.
