PAMFIR
Shot in enthralling long takes, this stunning debut sees a former smuggler reunited with his family at their home near the Ukrainian border only to be pulled into one last job for survival. Preparations for the annual Carnival festivities are well underway in a rural Ukrainian region of Chernivtsi when Leonid (Oleksandr Yatsentyuk) surprises his unsuspecting family after being abroad for years. Though his presence is welcomed by most of the community, his past vocation as a border smuggler casts a suspicious shadow wherever he goes. When his eager-to-please son shows signs of following in his father’s footsteps, Leonid must confront his past and decide what type of man he wants to be. Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk’s astonishingly assured debut film from this year’s Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes is a marvel in its filmmaking and ability to capture such a beautiful, tranquil landscape even as blood begins to seep through the snow.
