RETURN TO DUST
Ma (Wu Renlin) and Cao (Hai Qing) must forge a new life together after their families refuse to continue to support them. Both middle-aged and well past the time when their families expected them to marry, the impoverished new couple tries to live off the land in rural China. As they face a multitude of hardships, an unexpected bond begins to blossom. Cao suffers from a slew of physical struggles, and begins to rely more and more on Ma’s steadfast support. As the town around them is subject to constant demolition, Ma and Cao find themselves having to relocate, painfully, more than once. Return to Dust is a delicate and soulful tale of two people forced together later in life, but who find unexpected joy and love as they face difficult roadblocks as a team. This beautiful, methodical film marks the celebrated Chinese director Li Ruijun’s sixth feature.
