RODEO
Set in the hardscrabble suburbs of Paris, this fast-paced drama centers on biking fanatic Julia (Julie Ledru), a natural hustler who’s perfected a scheme for stealing second hand dirt bikes from unsuspecting marks. When she stumbles upon a “rodeo” — a gathering where riders show off eye-popping and potentially deadly stunts — lone wolf Julia believes she’s finally found her tribe and is determined to prove her mettle. Under the watchful surveillance of the crew’s mysterious leader, Julia hatches a daring heist that could earn the guys’ lasting respect … if she makes it out alive. First-time feature director Lola Quivoron spent years immersing herself in Paris’s biking culture, eventually filling the film’s cast with nonprofessional actors from the motocross scene. In an unforgettable debut performance, real-life biker Ledru inhabits the film’s protagonist with an almost feral intensity. Capturing a unique subculture in all of its brutality and beauty, Rodeo is a one-of-a-kind, high-octane cinematic experience that marks the arrival of an exciting new filmmaking talent.
