Known for their inventive, genre-defying body of work, maverick filmmaking duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (The Endless, PFF26) offer up a twisted reflection of our paranoid, conspiracy-obsessed times in this clever mix of buddy comedy and sci-fi thriller. Under the menacing, smoke-filled skies of contemporary Los Angeles, Levi (Benson) moves into a dingy new apartment building. There he meets his new neighbor John (Moorhead), and soon the two aimless loners are spending much of their time together. One day, they witness an inexplicable occurrence in Levi’s apartment, and their initial fear quickly dissipates when they realize that they’ve stumbled on a perfect subject for a documentary. As they get deeper into the mystery, they each fall down different rabbit holes of increasingly bizarre theories, and Benson and Moorhead likewise push their filmmaking into wilder, weirder directions. A mind-bending ode to the power and peril of inventing stories, Something in the Dirt is a testament to the boundless creativity of these singular filmmakers.
