SORCERER
Infamously linked with other big-budget bombs of its era like Michael Cimino’s Heaven’s Gate or Coppola’s One From the Heart, Sorcerer has since become a cornerstone of William Friedkin’s legendary career. Bursting with his unparalleled marrying of gritty realism with larger-than-life set pieces, Sorcerer offers a spectacle grounded in treacherous mud and rugged, slow-moving convoys. Using Clouzot’s The Wages of Fear as a starting point, Friedkin crafts a tense descent into man’s temptation of fate and what comes out the other side. The film can be credited with introducing the cinematic world to Germany’s Tangerine Dream and Friedkin’s keen use of their sublimely alien and pulsing sound. Reflecting on its 45th anniversary, William Friedkin’s white-knuckle thriller Sorcerer marks the end of the New Hollywood era. Join us for the mind-blowing kick off to our limited series, Cosmic Music, celebrating electronic band Tangerine Dream’s otherworldly dominance of cinema scores of the 1980s and beyond, which continues past the festival to early November.
