THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN
31st Philadelphia Film Festival Opening Night Film
Though the constant billows of smoke from the Irish mainland are a ceaseless reminder of civil war, the comically dim Pádraic (Colin Farrell) is more concerned about his long-standing custom of downing a couple pints with his friend Colm (Brendan Gleeson) than any distant unrest. Yet Pádraic’s world falls apart when the more astute Colm abruptly severs ties with his dull barmate in favor of a more meaningful life on the idyllic island. As the insecure and prattling Pádraic desperately seeks support from his educated sister (Kerry Condon) and a young, abused local (Barry Keoghan), the now-lonely Irishman must heed Colm’s threats of violence lest he bring bloodshed to the idyllic island. Reuniting with In Bruges filmmaker Martin McDonagh, Farrell and Gleeson’s chemistry is undeniable, as is their knack for McDonagh’s madcap dialogue and outrageous situations. THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN’s ingenious foray into the fragility of male ego and friendship is a hilarious — and sometimes bloody — bout between two very different individuals seeking their own definition of peace.
