THE BLUE CAFTAN
With her touching debut feature ADAM (PFF28) Moroccan director Maryam Touzani asserted her place as one of contemporary cinema’s most exciting new voices. Her follow-up more than delivers on that promise, offering a profoundly empathetic meditation on commitment and sacrifice. Middle-aged married couple Mina (Adam star Lubna Azabal) and Halim (Saleh Bakri) operate a small, old-fashioned garment shop, from which master tailor Halim painstakingly embroiders magnificent caftans for a choosy clientele. Mina and Halim have an unconventional marriage, informed by affection and mutual respect but burdened by a secret that Halim can’t name. When Mina begins to notice the palpable charge between Halim and his young apprentice Youssef (Ayoub Missioui), she’s forced to reevaluate the nature of their relationship and the limits of her devotion. Brought to life by a trio of deeply affecting performances, THE BLUE CAFTAN is an understated yet immensely powerful exploration of the various forms love can take.
