THE BOX
After a catastrophic mining accident, teenager Hatzín (Hatzín Navarrete) travels from Mexico City to the northern state of Chihuahua to claim his father’s remains. On his way home, Hatzín spots a man on the street who looks exactly like his estranged dad. The man, Mario (Hernán Mendoza), swears that the resemblance is just a coincidence, but Hatzín becomes obsessed with the notion that he’s found his father alive. Something about the boy’s desperation softens the older man’s reserve, and Mario begins bringing him along on his assignments recruiting low-wage factory workers. As the two grow closer and Hatzín becomes an integral part of Mario’s business, the boy is increasingly troubled by the moral dubiousness of his new father figure. Powered by the beguiling mystery at its center, THE BOX is at once a taut thriller and a furious critique of industrial exploitation.
